Audience: Mental Health Professionals including Social Workers, Psychologists, Counselors, Graduate Students and pre-licensed therapists who are on a track to licensure.

About This Course:

EMDR therapy can be transformative, but real-world clinical practice rarely follows a scripted protocol. Clients dissociate, become stuck in looping patterns, disclose information that changes the course of treatment, struggle with stabilization, or present with complexities that leave even experienced clinicians questioning their next step.

This interactive 3-hour workshop explores the ethical challenges that arise when EMDR treatment becomes complicated, unpredictable, or simply messy. Through case examples, discussion, and practical application, participants will examine common ethical dilemmas encountered in trauma-focused treatment and explore decision-making strategies grounded in professional ethics, EMDRIA standards, and sound clinical judgment.

Participants will leave with greater confidence in identifying ethical issues, managing clinical complexity, and responding thoughtfully when there is no perfect answer. Because when EMDR gets messy, ethical practice is often less about finding the right answer and more about asking the right questions.

Learning Objectives:

1) Identify at least three ethical dilemmas commonly encountered in EMDR therapy practice.

2) Describe how the core ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and fidelity apply to clinical decision-making in EMDR therapy.

3) Differentiate between client-centered care and therapist-driven interventions in EMDR treatment planning.

4) Apply a structured ethical decision-making framework to complex EMDR clinical scenarios.

5) Recognize signs of protocol drift and describe strategies for maintaining fidelity to the EMDR model while ensuring client safety and ethical practice.

About The Presenter:

Linda Mixon, LCSW, is an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant and Basic Training Facilitator with more than 20 years of post-master’s experience in behavioral health. Her professional background includes private practice, community mental health, the Department of Defense, and the Veterans Administration.

Linda specializes in working with Veterans, First Responders, and other professionals serving in high-stress, high-responsibility roles, including those who hold the nation’s highest security clearances. Her clinical experience also includes serious mental illness, developmental trauma, the full spectrum of dissociative disorders, at-risk youth, exploited and trafficked survivors, complicated grief following suicide, and survivors of violent crime.

She is especially passionate about working with newly trained EMDR therapists in both individual and group consultation. She enjoys helping clinicians move beyond the protocol to develop sound clinical judgment while maintaining fidelity to the EMDR model.

Linda lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her husband, two dogs, two cats, a flock of chickens, and a backyard koi pond. Originally from Buffalo, New York, she earned both her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her Master of Social Work there. When she’s not working, she enjoys gardening, baking sourdough, spending time with her grandchildren, and a proud member of Bills Mafia. Go Bills!

Florida Clinicians: Under 64B4 - 6.002, the 491 rules permit the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the American Psychological Association (APA) to be approved continuing education providers for all 491 licensees. You will simply upload your CE certificate to CE Broker.
